Make sure you check Nicaragua entry requirements 2023 before planning your Nicargua Real Estate trip. As of June 16, 2022, Nicaragua entry requirements have changed, allowing travelers to fly to Nicaragua with fewer restrictions.

Covid Nicaragua Entry Requirements 2023

Nicaragua’s new entry requirements allow vaccinated travelers to enter the country without a negative RT-PCR Covid-19 test. Vaccinated travelers may enter Nicaragua by presenting a digital or physical vaccination certificate of the following vaccines: Sputnik V, Sputnik Light, Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Covishield, Soberana 02, Abadala, Janssen from Johnson & Johnson, Sinopharm, and Coviran.

However, Nicaragua entry requirements 2023 state that unvaccinated travelers must still present a negative RT-PCR Covid test with results from within 72 hours prior to arrival. This applies to both children and adults.

Travelers should keep in mind that Nicaragua entry requirements 2023 strictly enforce this type of Covid test and the timeline in which the test was taken and results received. Neither antigen tests nor results older than 72 hours will be accepted. Non-nationals must fill out an immigration form available here at least seven days prior to travel. The recent change in Nicaragua’s entry requirements allows vaccinated travelers to fly into Managua or cross the southern border from Costa Rica with relative ease and this guide will detail the process to prepare you for your trip.

Traveling to Nicaragua by Air

Travelers can fly directly to Augusto C. Sandino airport, located in the capital city of Managua. Currently, Avianca, Copa Airlines, American Airlines, Spirit Airlines, United, Delta and Aeromexico are the major airlines flying into Managua. If you’re traveling from the United States, most flights will connect from Miami, Florida as well as Houston, Texas. According to Nicaragua entry requirements 2023, unvaccinated travelers must send their negative RT-PCR Covid test to the airlines via e-mail for approval by MINSA, the Nicaraguan health ministry.

Nicaragua entry requirements 2023 for unvaccinated travelers must be followed stringently, as the airlines will turn away those who have not registered their Covid tests at least 36 hours beforehand. The airline company sends detailed instructions on how to register your negative RT-PCR test to your email once you have booked your ticket. Following the airlines Covid test protocol is the most important part of Nicaragua’s entry requirements 2023.

Arrival at Nicaragua Airport

After landing in Managua, you will encounter a brief and simple customs process. Nicaragua entry requirements include a $10 travel visa and some basic information about your trip. Make sure to carry some cash, either USD or Nicaraguan currency, the Cordoba, as you cannot pay with a credit card. Bear in mind that the travel visa is only valid for 90 days and that if you decide to extend your trip beyond three months you will have to apply for an extension.

Have your trip information on hand because the customs agents ask for your destination in Nicaragua and a telephone number at which you can be contacted. If you are traveling with any pricy electronics, you should avoid keeping them in their original packaging. Customs agents keep an eye out for expensive items that can be valued and taxed at their discretion. Items that may draw attention include:

  • Binoculars (these will be confiscated)
  • High end camera lenses
  • Drones (these will be confiscated)
  • Glasses/Contact Lenses in their original packaging
  • Prescription medications
  • Expensive electronics
  • Multiple laptops, smartphones and tablets

Once you’ve cleared Customs, there are taxi drivers waiting to take you to your destination. Overall, Nicaraguan’s entry requirements by air are straightforward and travelers seldom find themselves encountering any problems. The stunning beaches of Popoyo are approximately 3 hours from Augusto C. Sandino airport.

Tips for Air Entry to Nicaragua

As Covid restrictions begin to lighten up around the world, Nicaragua entry requirements have followed suit. Here are a few general tips to travelers who decide to travel by air to Nicaragua while following Nicaragua’s entry requirements.

  1. Carry USD in small denominations. Border agents may not have change on hand. Be sure to travel with clean, unmarked bills as this is often the only US currency accepted.
  2. Arrange your taxi driver beforehand. You can negotiate a better price and you won’t have to worry about an important leg of your journey. We highly recommend Yasmil Transportation for all of your taxi and travel needs for both Nicaragua and especially Liberia/San Jose and border crossing. Let them know Emerald sent you and you’ll be sure to be in good hands.
  3. Carry your prescription for your medicine and receipts for expensive items. Customs agents are fickle and can confiscate your goods if they deem it to be worth over $500 or lacking the proper documentation.

Traveling to Nicaragua by Land

Nicaragua travel requirements are similar when travelers cross into Nicaragua by land through Peñas Blancas, the southern border of Nicaraguan that border the northern region of Costa Rica. Nicaragua entry requirements are the same for this route but the process differs slightly.

Typically, travelers fly to Liberia, a northern city in Costa Rica situated a little over an hour away from the border. Similar to Nicaragua’s travel requirements, Costa Rica also recently loosened their Covid protocol. Just as we updated for April 2022, Costa Rica no longer requires travel insurance, proof of vaccination, or a negative Covid test to enter the country. However, travelers require proof of onward travel out of Costa Rica. A bus or plane ticket suffices.

If necessary, travelers can purchase a bus ticket on site to satisfy this requirement. The border is open from 6:00 AM – 12:00 AM on Monday – Saturday and 6:00 AM – 8:00 PM on Sunday.

Arrival in Liberia

After landing in Liberia, Costa Rica, you can find a host of taxi drivers that can take you to the border. The ride should cost approximately $80.00 – $90.00 USD. This rate may vary depending upon the size of the vehicle. You can also arrange a taxi beforehand to pick you up upon arrival. The drive to the border is smooth and only takes a little over an hour. Ideally, you want to arrive at the border in the morning or as early as possible. The Peñas Blanca border can be rather busy during the afternoon and the mid-day heat is unforgiving.

  1. Once arriving at the Costa Rican border, travelers have to pay a $10.00 USD exit fee. Look for a small, unassuming office on the right side of the Costa Rican border. Travelers can pay the fee in either Colones or USD.
  2. After paying your exit fee, move on towards the immigration office to your left. Customs officers request your passport, exit fee payment, and proof of onward travel. Keep all of these documents on hand in order to avoid unnecessary hassle. Assuming no congestion, travelers can expect to clear Costa Rican customs in approximately 15-20 minutes.
  3. Finally, you will pass your bag through an X-ray machine and be on your way. Again, the earlier you arrive to the border the more likely you pass through in a timely manner.

After clearing Costa Rican customs, you trek about 200 meters towards the Nicaraguan customs office. If luggage burdens you or you are otherwise fatigued, tricycle drivers can ferry you to the other side for a nominal fee. Nicaraguan officers will stop you in the middle of the walk between borders to check your passport and confirm that you have been processed correctly according to Nicaragua entry requirements.

Do you need a taxi driver?

As we previously mentioned, we highly recommend Yasmil Transportation to help coordinate the most reliable and safe drivers ahead of time, for peace of mind. He can offer you any special stops or accommodate any specific requests, all to be organized ahead of time.

Nicaraguan Customs at the Border

Nicaragua entry requirements are simple and clearing customs should not take longer than 15-20 minutes. Upon arrival, you pay a $1.00 USD municipal fee as part of a standard Nicaragua entry requirement. Customs agents request your passport, the address of your destination, and your occupation.

The 90 day travel visa costs $10.00 and you pay in either USD or Cordobas. Nicaraguan customs does not accept credit or debit cards. After clearing customs, your luggage passes through an X-ray machine in accordance with Nicaragua’s entry requirements and you will be on your way to your destination.

Travelers can find taxi drivers ready to take you to any one of the breathtaking destinations in Nicaragua. The popular beaches of Popoyo and lively city of San Juan del Sur are both rather close to the southern border so make sure to visit.

Tips for Land Entry to Nicaragua

Covid restrictions are beginning to ease up around the world and the change in the Nicaragua entry requirements reflects this global trend. Here are a few general tips to travelers who choose to travel by land into Nicaragua through the Peñas Blancas border while following Nicaraguas entry requirements.

  1. Carry USD with you in small denominations (bills under $20.00). Border agents oftentimes do not have change on hand and waste your time looking for it. Remember to have clean, unmarked bills to simplify and guarantee your currency will be accepted.
  2. Dress for comfort. After clearing the Costa Rican border, you have to lug your bags on a somewhat long, albeit flat, stretch of road. Long clothes may not be comfortable.
  3. Have your travel documents, including your itinerary, readily available. Customs requests your passport a minimum of three times throughout the border crossing.
  4. Be wary of offers to help cross the border in exchange for money. Crossing the border is easy and those offering their assistance will oftentimes inflate the difficulty of the process. If you have a lot of luggage, children or elderly, or just want to have a simpler crossing, there are carts and ciclos (bicycles with front seats for passengers) as well as luggage space that can be hired. We recommend negotiating and agreeing on a price with the person prior to accepting the ride. Anywhere from $10-15 is appropriate; all depending on number of pieces of luggage.
  5. Schedule all of your taxi rides before you land. You may be able to negotiate a better rate with a taxi driver beforehand and arranging everything prior to your arrival will give you peace of mind. Yasmil Transportation is our number one recommendation.
  6. Don’t forget to factor your taxi rides into your overall travel budget. Flights to Liberia are generally cheaper than flights to Managua. A round trip taxi ride from Liberia to your destination in Nicaragua could sway your budget in the wrong direction.

This month Magnific Rock set sail on the Nica waves with an incredible sailing crew based in San Juan Del Sur and it was a TRIUMPH! Our guests were thrilled at the opportunity to embark on a spectacular sailing trip along the west coast line of the Nicaraguan shores, which we are now delighted to be offering as part of our excursions.

A group of people from all different parts of the world gathered at the Dockside in San Juan Del Sur where there was an unmistakable buzz of excitement in the air. People greeted each other with warm smiles and engaging conversation in anticipation of the day ahead.

Living the dream…

After securing our life jackets we hopped onto the water taxi which took us to board the 47’ Catamaran. Once on board we were welcomed by smiling faces, cold drinks and ambient music to set the perfect atmosphere for a day of pure indulgence. To say we felt like we were in a Jay-Z music video is an understatement. It was the perfect blend of luxury and fun. A mix of 28 strangers bonding over Mai Tai’s as we glided through the ocean, watching dolphins dancing in the wake of our waves.

The smooth sailing soothed us all into a state of joyous relaxation as we soaked in the fantastic ambience, sunshine, and spectacular landscape. We arrived at a hidden beach with white sand and clear waters where we anchored for a few hours of exploring and leisure.

Excited guests dived off the back of the Catamaran into the sparkling cool waters and others were escorted across on a paddle board. So don’t worry if you’re not a swimmer, we have you covered! On the boat delicious platters of ceviche, hummus, salsa, chips and dip were served and everyone was extremely satisfied.

The crew complimented the whole experience with professional, friendly and efficient service. They offered a never ending supply of drinks and delicious food, which were all included in the price and well worth the $$’s!

The return sail was timed perfectly with the sunset and elated guests danced and sang along with the crew as the golden sunset filled the evening sky. The day was a hit and everyone left the boat with huge smiles, filled with happiness.

Book your Nicaraguan Sailing Trip with Magnific Rock!

This is an absolutely amazing experience that is not to be missed and we can’t wait to go on the next sailing trip! Make sure to book your sailing excursion with us on your next visit here. Your travel to Nicaragua can be an easy journey if you are informed about the process, requirements and restrictions.

How to get here and what you need to know!

Nicaragua yoga retreat and surf camp, Magnific Rock, has been stealing the hearts of travellers since they opened their doors in 2011. With the borders of Costa Rica reopening earlier this year and flights operating into Managua, it is once again an easy journey to reach this paradise destination.

HOW TO GET HERE AND COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS

Entry into Nicaragua at this time is as relaxed as the people. The Nicaraguan government has done a great job at making this an easy process. No quarantine is required upon arrival and as long as you are holding a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test, as well as a valid passport with at least 6 months validity and proof of onward travel, then you will be welcomed with open arms.

FLYING INTO MANAGUA

Currently three airlines are operating flights into Managua, Nicaragua; Avianca, Copa and AeroMexico. All airlines require you to register your negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test 36 hours before your flight to Nicaragua. Your airline should send you an email with a link on where and how to upload this information. The RT-PCR test must be taken a maximum of 72 hours before the flight to Nicaragua. You will need to present your negative RT-PCR test results to immigration on arrival at Managua airport and there is a $10 entry fee to be paid in cash to the immigration officers.

Once you have exited the airport Magnific Rock can arrange for a taxi to pick you at the airport with our reliable and friendly taxi drivers who will bring you on the 2.5hr scenic drive to Magnific Rock, Popoyo. If you would like to stop for drinks or food, just let the driver know and he will be happy to accommodate you.

FLYING INTO COSTA RICA

Alternatively, many guests have been choosing to arrive here via Costa Rica. Popoyo, where Magnific Rock is located, is in the south of Nicaragua, and it is very close to the land border crossing at Penas Blancas. There are direct flights available into Liberia, Costa Rica, and the border crossing is generally quick and easy making this a good option for many. You do not need to provide a negative COVID-19 PCR test to enter Costa Rica, and if you are fully vaccinated with the last dose being administered a minimum of 14 days prior to your arrival in Costa Rica, or you are 18 years of age or younger, you do not need travel insurance. Details of accepted vaccines are listed at the bottom of this article. However, if you are unvaccinated, you must obtain travel insurance for the entirety of your stay in Costa Rica.

World Nomads Travel Insurance is a reliable insurance company that offer the full necessary coverage. Whichever insurance you choose, it must meet these requirements:

1. Valid during the entire stay in Costa Rica (coverage dates)

2. $50,000 for medical expenses, including COVID-19 infection

3. $2,000 for lodging expenses in the event of COVID-19 quarantine

Travelers must ask their insurance company for a certificate or letter in English or Spanish stating the following information:

1. Name of the individual traveling

2. Validity of the effective policy during the Costa Rica visit (travel dates)

3. Guaranteed coverage for medical expenses in the event of COVID-19 in Costa Rica, valued at least $50,000

4. Minimum coverage of $2,000 for lodging expenses for quarantine or trip interruption for this same amount

This certificate must specify that the policy covers COVID-19 and must be uploaded to the HEALTH PASS to be reviewed and approved by Costa Rican authorities.

COSTA RICA HEALTH PASS

You must complete the HEALTH PASS form within 72 hours of your arrival to Costa Rica. And if you are fully vaccinated you must attach your vaccination certificate to the HEALTH PASS. After you complete the form you will receive a QR code that must be carried on your phone and shown to immigration on arrival to Costa Rica.

In addition to the registered HEALTH PASS, tourists must also have their passport with the validity of a minimum of 6 months and be in good condition, along with proof of onward or return travel and sufficient funds, which is a minimum of $100 a month, to cover the entirety of your stay in Costa Rica.

CROSSING THE BORDER AT PEÑAS BLANCAS INTO NICARAGUA

The Peñas Blancas border crossing is open from 6am to 11pm and we recommend that you arrive as early as possible as the border can get very busy.

GETTING TO PEÑAS BLANCAS

Transport is easily accessible across the border and we recommend you either book an International Bus with Tica Bus, Nica Bus or Transnica. The bus will take you to the border, wait for you and drop you off at your final bus destination in Nicaragua. We can arrange for a taxi to be waiting to pick you up from the bus stop. This is a completely hassle free option, but you must book your bus ticket in advance.

Traveling independently is easy and cheap with regular shuttles available from Liberia and La Cruz airport to Peñas Blancas border crossing. The bus or shuttle takes around 1 hour and costs 1760 colones.

PAY THE EXIT FEE

When you arrive at the border you will be directed to a small office where you will need to pay the $10 Costa Rica exit fee. After this, continue on to the immigration office to receive a stamp in your passport and show your receipt for payment of the exit fee.

ENTERING NICARAGUA

Now you have officially left Costa Rica and need to either walk (5 mins) or travel in your transport to the Nicaraguan immigration office. Here you need to pay a $14 entry fee and show proof of your negative RT-PCR test along with proof that you submitted the Nicaragua Health form. You are required to submit this form 7 days before entry into Nicaragua. The immigration officer will also ask for your accommodation address in Nicaragua and a Nicaraguan contact number. You will receive a stamp in your passport and you are now free to enter and start exploring the beautiful land of Nicaragua.

FROM THE BORDER TO MAGNIFIC ROCK

Once you have entered Nicaragua there are an array of shuttles, taxis and buses available to take you to your first destination, which is normally San Juan Del Sur. From San Juan Del Sur you can hop on the local chicken buses for a true Nicaraguan experience or we can arrange for a taxi to pick you up.

ARRIVING AT MAGNIFIC ROCK

Now it’s time for you to relax and enjoy the friendly Nicaraguan hospitality along with spectacular views across the Emerald Coastline. Sip on a Flor de Cana and enjoy some delicious food at our restaurant. In no time at all, you will be feeling revived from your journey and it won’t be long until you are ready to dive into the water and catch some waves with our Magnific Rock Nicaragua Surf Camp. We have the best waves for beginner surfers on our doorstep at the aptly named “Beginners Bay”. And for the more experienced surfer, there are an endless array of spectacular bays to explore with world class surf breaks.

LEAVING NICARAGUA

PCR TEST

When it’s time for you to return home we can help organize the COVID-19 PCR test depending on your countries requirements. We have home testing kits available which are accepted by the United States or we can book you an appointment for a lab test at the official Ministry of Health: MINSA, in Managua.

While Costa Rica does not require a negative test to enter, you will most likely need one for your next flight. Most labs in Costa Rica will only provide PCR results the next day, so if time is tight, you can get same day testing and results in Managua for $150.00 prior to departure.

The test is done at MINSA testing facility and is available from 08:00am until 10:30am. You will receive your results via email any time between 15:00 and 17:00 that same day.

EXIT FEES

Exit fees must be paid at immigration when leaving the country. If you are flying out of Managua, you will need to pay a $35 exit fee at the airport. If you are exiting the country at a land border crossing, the exit fee is $4. Try to have the correct money as change is rarely available.

ACCEPTED VACCINES

AstraZeneca: Covishield, Vaxzervia, AXD1222, ChAdOx1, ChAdOx1_nCoV19 India

VIBE

Magnific Yoga at Magnific Rock Nicaragua Yoga Retreat

Hi everyone,

My name is Vibe, I was born in Denmark and I’ve been traveling and living in Central America the last year. I’ve been practicing yoga physically, mentally and spiritually for more than 10 years. I trained at Nexus Yoga Institute and Wellness Center in Nosara, Costa Rica, where I gained my 200 hours, YTT certified.

My main yoga teaching styles are vinyasa, vinyasa krama, slow flow, yoga for surfers, yin, hatha and meditation. In my own practice I love fast paced vinyasa flows, vinyasa krama and ashtanga.

Vibe’s Classes
9am Fridays

My classes tend to encourage playfulness, connecting with your inner child, and allowing yourself to enjoy the present moment. It fills my heart with joy when I see and/or hear practitioners challenge themselves, laugh it out if it doesn’t work and cheer when they do succeed.

I strongly believe that yoga is meant to feel good. All bodies are different and therefore all practices are unique. In my classes I always intend to create a space for practitioners to listen, connect and honor their bodies. abilities and limitations. We are all imperfectly perfect, perfectly imperfect.

We all look forward to you joining us in the Magnific Yoga Studio. Please contact Rebecca at: +505 84470406 if you have any questions or you wish to reserve your place for class. Stay tuned; Magnific Rock Yoga workshops and retreats coming soon.

International Youth Day, and just like every day, we thank the youth of our community. They are the future.

The energy, laughter and endless smiles that youth bring to our community events is incredible and they are always ready to have fun and show us how talented they are.

At community rugby events or even weekly rugby training there is always a self-organised youth game. From watching their parents and family members play in the Tola Gallos team they have picked up new skills and new team mates.

have hosted numerous retreats here at Magnific Rock and always involve the youth in community yoga and performances. They never fail to amaze us at their desire to learn new skills and have fun while doing it.

We continue to learn from the youth of today and admire their fresh, positive outlook. When was the last time you did handstands on the beach? Or laughed so hard you fell over? Why is it termed a bad thing to be ‘childish’? It seems pretty great to us even more on International Youth Day!

¡¡¡HAPPY INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY!!!
